Why are my eyelids droopy?
The eyelids age just like every other part of the body. As skin ages, it loses its elasticity. This lack of elasticity in addition to the constant pull from gravity results in excessive skin collecting on the eyelids. This excess skin over time will cause wrinkles and bulges. On your upper eyelids, the skin can create an extra fold that hangs over the eyelashes, and in some cases can obscure vision. The fat that cushions your eyeball can also bulge and create the appearance of bags. Dr. Sapir Karli is happy to see you in consultation and provide you with detailed recommendations for these minor outpatient procedures.
What is a blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also called and eye lift, is a surgery performed by Dr. Karli to reduce the appearance of under eye bags, and droopy upper eyelids. Many people undergo blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons, but it can also serve to correct the functionality of the eye.
Am I a candidate for blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is not for everyone. The best candidates for blepharoplasty are in good general health, and have realistic goals and expectations. Most patients who undergo blepharoplasty are over the age of 35, but some may choose to have it done earlier.
What to expect from blepharoplasty
Before your surgery with Dr. Karli, you should do a few things to prepare. Be sure to arrange a ride home for after your surgery. You should also have someone stay the night with you after the procedure. Expect to stay home and limit your activities for several days after the procedure.
Have the following items ready:
- Ice packs or cubes
- Gauze pads
- Eye drops (your doctor can recommend a brand)
- Clean towels and washcloths
- Over-the-counter pain medication (your doctor will recommend a type, as certain painkillers should not be used)
The blepharoplasty procedure takes around two hours to complete, depending on how extensive the surgery is. Dr. Karli will most likely use a local anesthesia and oral sedation. However, if you are having your surgery at a hospital, you will likely receive IV sedation.
The upper eyelids will be cut along the natural crease. Through these incisions, your surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove the excess fat and skin. The lower eyelids can be done using several techniques. One technique involves cutting the inside of the lower eyelid to remove fat. The line will not be noticeable after this method. Another method involves butting along the eyelash margin. Through this incision, Sapir Karli M.D. can remove skin, loose muscle and fat. This line fades after a short time.
