For more than thirty years, Dr. Alan Mendelsohn has been considered a preeminent cataract surgeon in Broward County. As a result of his outstanding surgical and clinical skills, Alan Mendelsohn MD, FACS has repeatedly been awarded the prestigious “Top Doctor” Award, as voted by South Florida physicians. Since entering private practice on July 1, 1987, cataract surgery has been his principal area of surgical expertise. Dr. Mendelsohn’s surgical volume has increased significantly over time, driven largely by patient referrals and referrals from fellow healthcare professionals. To date, Alan Mendelsohn MD has performed far more than 30,000 cataract surgeries with extremely pleased patients who have stellar visual outcomes. The trust placed in him by more than 200 physicians, and their family members, whom Dr Mendelsohn has performed cataract surgery stands as a meaningful professional endorsement of his surgical skills and quality of care rendered.

Since 2016, Dr Mendelsohn’s operating room (“OR”) practice has been devoted exclusively to cataract surgery, performed either as a standalone procedure or in combination with glaucoma surgery, making cataract surgery his sole OR specialty. Almost every comprehensive ophthalmologist does a multitude of different types of eye surgeries, totally unrelated to cataracts. Dr Mendelsohn has made laser cataract surgery to be his exclusive surgical focus in the past decade, thereby performing superb, meticulous, cataract surgery with fantastic visual outcomes for his grateful patient. His surgical results and visual outcomes remain consistently excellent, leading to a continued increase in both patient and physician referrals.

Dr. Alan Mendelsohn’s Biography:

For thirty years, Dr. Alan Mendelsohn has served as a national leader in the field of ophthalmology. He attended Northwestern University’s Honors Program in Medical Education and Northwestern University Medical School, where he also completed his residency training in Ophthalmology. At the completion of this training, the prestigious Heed Ophthalmic Foundation recognized him as one of the ten most outstanding graduating ophthalmologists in the United States. Alan Mendelsohn MD, FACS is an innovative leader in developing and enhancing laser procedures for glaucoma and cataract surgery, and has published his work in prestigious scientific publications.

Dr. Mendelsohn and his family moved to South Florida in 1986, where he completed a Fellowship at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in cornea, cataract surgery, and external diseases. For the last 40+ years, Bascom Palmer has been ranked the #1 ophthalmology hospital and training programs in the U.S. While practicing in South Florida, Dr. Mendelsohn has been actively engaged in organized medicine at the local, state, and national levels. He served as President of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology in 1996 and has assumed leadership roles for two decades in that organization’s public policy efforts.

For more than twenty years, physicians throughout South Florida awarded Dr. Alan Mendelsohn with the prestigious “Top Doctor” Award based on his clinical and surgical skills. Of the approximately 150 ophthalmologists in Broward County, typically, only 4 ophthalmologists are selected for this honor. For three decades, physicians throughout the community consistently refer to Dr. Mendelsohn as a “Doctor’s Doctor”. He continues to proudly serve dozens of physicians and their families (including regional ophthalmologists), as their go-to doctor for all of their vision and ophthalmic surgical needs.

Dr. Alan Mendelsohn has held numerous leadership positions in both the Broward County Medical Association and the Florida Medical Association. He has also received a number of national and state-wide awards for his efforts and leadership from organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Florida Medical Association, and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology. Alan Mendelsohn MD, FACS has authored numerous scientific publications and has presented his findings at international and national ophthalmology society conferences.
